Basic Education Department

The Basic Education Services Department took off on 3rd February 2023. It was carved out from Schools Department which was divided into two: Secondary Education Services and Primary Education Services. The Department is in charge of all Primary Schools-related matters in the State dealing with processes involving School Administration, Monitoring Educational Activities and coordinating Home-Grown School Feeding Programme.


The Department is sub-divided into 4 units:

a. Primary School

b. Child Labour, Orphanage/Vulnerable Children

c. Internally Displaced Persons and Arabic/Islamiyah Schools

d. Home-Grown School Feeding Programme

Formulation of Policies and Guidelines for Operations of Nursery/Primary Schools
Processing of Application for the Opening of New Public Primary Schools at the request of Communities for approval to establish after Inspection visit by Officials
Ensuring that the Schools comply with laid down policies and guidelines
Handles requests for Change of Name and/or Address of Schools EXCLUDING LAND MATTER
Ensuring that the Private Schools pay their dues/levies to the Coffers of Government Purse
Collation of Education data of Private Primary Schools for Planning
Inspecting and Monitoring of the Schools to ensure that a high standard of safety and hygiene is maintained and recommending approval to establish
Processing of Application of Primary Schools for Permission to Embark on an Excursion
Child Labour, Vulnerable Children, and Arabic/Islamiyah Schools
Eradication of the Worst Forms of Child Labour in the State. Most of these vulnerable children are found along the streets when their mates are in their various Schools. The Ministry works with the Women Affairs Ministry and these children are placed in Schools and Homes
Organizing training workshops for school guidance counsellors
Transfer of Internally Displaced Students affected by Boko Haram insurgence from the Northern part of Nigeria into public schools
iv. Arabic/Islamiyah Education Matters
a. Processing of application for the opening of Arabic/Islamiyah Schools
b. Inspecting and Monitoring of Arabic/Islamiyah Schools to ensure that a high standard of safety and hygiene is maintained
c. Ensuring that Arabic/Islamiyah Schools pay their dues/levies to the Coffers of Government Purse
d. Evaluation of Arabic/Islamiyah School result
